Welcome

As the Assembly Member for Aberavon, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to my website. The site's purpose is to give you more information on the work of the National Assembly and of the Aberavon constituency.

Please click this image to see a larger map of the Aberavon constituencyIn May 2007 I was returned as the Assembly Member for Aberavon for a third term. It continues to be an honour to represent the people of Aberavon, and it is source of great pride that people of the area have supported me on three separate occasions. The Assembly Government is now a coalition between the Labour Party, which is the largest Party within the Assembly and Plaid Cymru. The One Wales agreement on which the coalition was formed is making good progress on delivering its policy goals.

Welsh Assembly Building The establishment of the National Assembly in 1999 was about bringing the decision making process and public accountability closer to the people of Wales.

Our responsibilities now includes health, social services, education, economic development, culture and sport, non-rail public transport and the environment. In June 2003 responsibility for the Fire Service was devolved to the Assembly, highlighting the evolving nature of the devolution settlement. We are developing new policies in all of these areas in a way that is best suited to the needs of Wales.

Margam Park Orangery In terms of its natural environment Aberavon is an area of great contrasts.

We have miles of sandy beaches in the south of the constituency at Aberavon and Crymlyn Burrows, while a short journey away are the mountains of the upper Afan Valley. The constituency is also home to two country parks at Margam and Afan.

Technium on the Baglan Energy Park As with its landscapes Aberavon is an area of great contrasts in relation to its industrial mix. The area is home to traditional industries such as steel production with the giant CORUS steel plant based in Port Talbot. Alongside these traditional industries the area also boasts a number of cutting edge IT and R&D companies with the majority of these being located at the ECM2 R&D centre and on the the Baglan Energy Park. The area is also home to the new Amazon distribution centre which will employ 1200 people..
