Welcome
As the Assembly Member for Aberavon, it gives me great pleasure
to welcome you to my website. The site's purpose is to give you
more information on the work of the National Assembly and of the
Aberavon constituency.
In May 2003 I was re-elected as AM for the constituency. I would like to thank the people of Aberavon for this privilege, and I look forward to serving the constituency for the next four years. I was returned to the Assembly along with 29 other Labour members, which means the Labour Party now hold half of the seats in the Assembly.
The establishment of the National
Assembly in 1999 was about bringing the decision
making process and public accountability closer to the people
of Wales.
|
Our responsibilities now includes health, social services,
education, economic development, culture and sport, non-rail
public transport and the environment. In June 2003 responsibility for the Fire Service was devolved to the Assembly, highlighting the evolving nature of the devolution settlement. We are developing new
policies in all of these areas in a way that is best suited
to the needs of Wales.

In terms of its natural environment Aberavon is an area of
great contrasts.
We have miles of sandy beaches in the south of the constituency
at Aberavon and Crymlyn Burrows, while a short journey away
are the mountains of the upper Afan Valley.
The constituency is also home to two country parks at Margam
and Afan.

Aberavon is also an industrial area incorporating both traditional
industries such as steel, to the new generation of businesses
that are beginning to locate on the Baglan Energy Park.
